Volunteer with us

Marine Rescue Coffs Harbour is operated by volunteers, and we welcome people from all walks of life to join us in serving the community and supporting safer waterways. Whether you want to be on the water, on the radios or helping behind the scenes, there’s a role that could suit you.

What Our Volunteers Do

Our volunteer roles fall broadly into two areas:

Operational Roles
These are roles directly involved in rescue operations and safety services, including:

  • Radio Operators — monitoring marine radios, coordinating communications and providing safety information.
  • Rescue Vessel Crew — responding to incidents on the water, assisting boaters in difficulty and helping people return to shore safely.

All operational roles involve comprehensive training covering practical skills and theory, designed to equip you for life-saving work on and off the water.

Support & Community Roles
Not all volunteer roles are on the water. Our unit also depends on volunteers who contribute their skills behind the scenes to keep us effective and connected with the community, including:

  • Event coordination and community engagement
  • Fundraising and sponsorship support
  • Administration, accounting and record-keeping
  • Radio Club management
  • Base and equipment maintenance
These roles are essential to our operations and often allow you to get involved right away while you explore other opportunities.

Training & Support

You don’t need prior marine or rescue experience to join. Marine Rescue NSW provides structured training for all roles, giving you the skills and qualifications you need — from marine radio operation and first aid to navigation, vessel handling and search-and-rescue procedures. Training paths vary by role, and you’ll be supported every step of the way.
